This is where we meet for your free 15–20 minute consultation — a real conversation, face to face.
This way you get to have a sense of who I am and if I'm someone you could talk to. No cost. No obligation.
We meet on encrypted video. No account, no download, nothing to install.
What to know before we meet. Please read.
A consultation is not therapy. This is a get-acquainted conversation. No therapist-client relationship exists between us unless and until we formally agree to begin therapy together.
Privacy has legal limits. Like any conversation with a licensed therapist, certain safety-related exceptions required by California law (such as mandated reporting) apply.
About this video room. This room runs on Jitsi video technology on Jim the Therapist's own private server. It is not a public meeting service, and no outside company carries our conversation — no Zoom, no Teams, no Google. The room belongs to this practice alone.
It is encrypted in transit. It is a private room appropriate for a brief first conversation, so please share only what you are comfortable sharing here. If we begin therapy together, we will discuss the platform for sessions at that time.
No recording. I do not record our conversation, and you agree not to record it. California is a two-party consent state.
Not for emergencies. If you are in crisis or experiencing an emergency, do not wait for this consultation — call 911, or call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any hour, any day.
Your choice, freely made. The consultation is free, carries no obligation, and you may end it at any time.

Once you agree, the door and scheduling below unlock. When you step into the room, you'll see the video window — it will say "Waiting for a moderator." That's normal. You won't be able to get beyond that screen until I sign in as moderator and let you in.

What to expect
Fifteen to twenty minutes, unhurried. You can ask me anything — how I work, fees, insurance, whether what you're carrying is something we could work on together.
You don't need to have it organized. Come as you are.
And if I'm not the right fit for what you need, I'll say so and point you toward who is.
